Virtual flags broadcast enhancement
2016 - 1 min read
While working as a software engineer on my placement at Hawk-Eye I developed software for broadcast enhancement that displayed each player’s national flag at the start of each set and went out live on Australian Channel 7 throughout the tournament.
The solution was built in C++ and used CUDA for computer vision. It involved calibration, calculation of foreground and background, and integration with other on-site software to render graphics ready for broadcast.
I trained operators on-site so that this software could run across all 7 courts that Hawk-Eye was covering at the 2015 Australian Open.
Highlight: At peak viewership, this broadcast enhancement reached 1.5 million viewers on Australian Channel 7.
